Our workshop

Two people, one wheel, one electric kiln, in a room of our house at A-28, Shaligram Society.

Small electric kiln with shelves of unglazed bowls in a home workshop Bowls drying on a wooden board after being dipped in green glaze

Who does what

Hetal Mistry · makes the pottery

I make every plate, katori and mug you see in the shop. I also mix and test the glazes. That is the reason there are only four of them. Each glaze has to go through months of our own family meals, the microwave and the dishwasher before I let it into the shop. A fifth colour has failed that test twice, so it is still on my shelf and not yours.

Kunal Mistry · orders and delivery

Kunal answers calls and WhatsApp, packs each box and hands it to the courier. Complaints go to him directly, he is the grievance officer of the shop.

How a plate is made, in 4 steps

  1. Throwing

The clay is kneaded by hand to push the air out, then shaped on the wheel.

  2. Trimming and drying

A day later, when the clay is firm like leather, the base is trimmed into a neat foot. Then the pieces dry slowly on open shelves until no moisture is left, which in the monsoon takes noticeably longer.

  3. First firing

The bisque firing makes the clay hard enough to hold and dip.

  4. Glaze and second firing

Each piece is dipped in white, green, blue or brown glaze, the base is wiped clean, and it goes back into the kiln at a higher temperature. This weekly firing is what sets the date your order can leave Surat.

Visits and pickup

You are welcome to see the pieces before you buy, or to collect an order instead of paying for shipping. Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm, after a phone call.
